IVM: patient friendly treatment

Fertility treatment - IVM - couple

For many couples with fertility problems, In Vitro Fertilization or IVF is the last solution to get pregnant. An important disadvantage of this fertility treatment is that it requires hormone  stimulation to mature several egg cells. This hormone cure is expensive and sometimes has side effects, for example overstimulation of the ovaries.

New treatment similar to IVF

In Vitro Maturation (IVM) is a new fertility treatment similar to IVF but without preliminary hormone treatment. In IVF mature eggs are taken from the ovaries, while in IVM immature eggs are sufficient.

IVM allows in vitro-development of embryos after collecting and maturing immature eggs. As soon as they are mature, the eggs can be fertilized with sperm of your partner or a donor, just like IVF.

The major advantage of IVM is that you don’t or hardly need any hormonal ovarian stimulation. IVM is therefore a more patient-friendly treatment than IVF and has very promising results.

Advantages of IVM:

  • Less hormonally taxing
  • Reduces side effects
  • Fewer appointments needed
  • Less expensive

When is IVM applied?

IVM is especially useful for woman with PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Woman with PCOS are often more sensitive to hormone treatments. Therefore IVF is not recommended because the hormones you have to take with IVF can lead to OHSS or Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome.

Since IVM requires a lower dose of ovarian stimulation or none at all, the risk of OHSS becomes much smaller. That makes the IVM technique particularly suitable for woman with PCOS.

For young woman diagnosed with cancer, IVM is a good alternative. Hormonal stimulation usually takes two or three weeks, delaying the start of the oncological treatment. An IVM egg puncture can be planned in a very short term, without prior hormone treatment.

Consultation IVM

In Belgium, IVM has been applied since 2010

The first IVM baby was born in Belgium in 1994 already. Over the years researchers have developed a technique that allows eggs to be aged in the laboratory.

Thanks to the persistence of a number of scientists to fully understand the complexity of human egg maturation and ovulation, IVM has expanded to other patients.

Please note that the best method of treatment always depends on the nature of your fertility problem. Therefore a fertility specialist must first review your medical file.
